Why set up a music school in Fife?
This is something we have been asked on several occasions and our answer is simple. All those involved in this endeavour are Fife based with most having lived their whole lives in the Fife area, and we have grown up with music at the heart of this county. Fife has always had a heart beating in time to the music but, due to economic and social changes that have occurred over the last few years, the opportunities for musicians or striving musicians have been limited. Venues have closed, schools have limited tuition on instruments, and private tuition only takes place at the students or the tutors’ homes.
We want to create a safe environment, for student and tutor, where music comes first. Learning to sing or play an instrument is enjoyable for both children and adults. Beyond the fun, it also teaches valuable skills like discipline, teamwork (a band), and fosters a sense of belonging.
Why start?
Music teaches so much to all ages but it’s not an easy journey. The thought of picking up that first instrument or singing in front of strangers can be daunting to say the least. However, we believe we have the best professional tutors to guide you through those first difficult moments and introduce you to a world that has no bounds. Music frees the mind and the ability to entertain will never leave you. At its most basic level, being able to sing or play an instrument with confidence is just downright fun.
What we offer
At present, the school is offering classes in voice, piano, drums, acoustic guitar, electric guitar and bass guitar. As demand grows for new instrument, lessons we will increase the availability of the relevant tutor. Just let us know what you want to learn, and we will endeavour to make sure you get the best tutor to help you move forward.
For your peace of mind and that of any potential student in your care, it’s good to know that all our music tutors are fully qualified expert musicians and hold PVG Disclosure registration for teaching children and protected adults.
What’s next?
Fife School of Music is open from 10am to 10pm daily (including weekends). Hour and half hour lessons can be booked by contacting us through e-mail or just give us a call. We will match you up with the most relevant tutor(s) who will ensure that you are booked in at a time that suits you. They will examine your requirements and level of skill, then tailor your future lessons to fully explore your potential and expectations.
For children, we recommend that they start learning music at 7 years of age and above. That way, they can understand the need to practice, and our tutors can help them move forward at a pace best suited to their abilities.
Where to find us
Fife School of Music is located in Rosyth, near the Dockyard. There is private parking at the school and a waiting area inside should you need to wait for your child or the lesson. We are also close to the Stagecoach 19 bus route which has stops along Castle Road, with a footpath leading to the school. See the webmap at the bottom of our home page to get detailed directions.
Remember, music is fun no matter what level you are at. The opportunity to perform drives some people on but, many just want to learn for their own benefit. All are welcome and all are encouraged to pick up that instrument.
Keep an eye out on our social media for upcoming events, summer schools, teaching weekends, performance classes. All will be easy to book and participate and your tutors will help.
Each of our tutors are PVG certified and handpicked for their enthusiasm, commitment to music and their individual passion to help others see the full potential in themselves. They're here to help you realise and attain your fuller capabilities. They are professionals, qualified in at least one instrument. It’s their job to tailor your needs into a learning experience where you will be able to see your potential and even move beyond your own expectations.
It’s the tutor who will arrange your lesson plans, however, it’s the school administration that will deal with all initial bookings, alterations or queries relating to any lesson.
Our tutors are there for you and will do their best to make sure that you have a great learning experience. They can teach from beginner level to advanced music on all the instruments mentioned below.
The piano is a timeless instrument that opens up endless musical possibilities. Many people start their musical journey on the piano, whether it's for learning to play new pieces, accompanying their voice, or exploring music composition. It's a great foundation for anyone looking to expand their musical horizons, and it complements any other instrument you may wish to pursue later on.
At Fife School of Music, we offer three piano rooms for lessons, ensuring a focused and comfortable learning environment. We’re committed to supporting your individual needs and goals, providing personalized guidance to help you succeed.
We welcome people of all ages and experience levels when teaching voice. We understand that there can be misconceptions about singing, with some believing that not having enough singing or musical experience means you're unable to pursue lessons or perform in any setting.
We are here to break this stigma. It’s okay to not have any prior experience. We know that no matter what stage of singing you’re currently at, through commitment and passion, you can grow and improve greatly.
Our tutors have been through the exact same point of learning you’re currently going through. They understand what you’ll need, but also how to make your lessons enjoyable. Singing lessons are meant to help you progress but are also meant to be fun. This is what we strive to achieve.
We have a dedicated room within the school for drum lessons, equipped with two electric drum kits. This setup allows the tutor to observe the student’s playing while also demonstrating techniques and styles for them to follow, maximising the learning experience.
Drumming equipment can be expensive and requires a spacious, soundproof room to avoid potential noise complaints. At Fife School of Music, we allow our students to book our drum room for practise outside of lessons. Our teachers and their students’ lessons come first for using the drum room, but we boast flexible times for booking our rooms. If you’re interested or know someone who might be, just get in touch and we’ll find a suitable time that works for you.
This is the most accessible instrument on the market. It's where it all begins for many people, gaining inspiration and the desire to move forward with their musical aspirations. Some people start with the acoustic, using it to accompany their singing or to write songs. It can be a great stepping stone to take up the electric guitar, or bass, or in fact, any musical instrument. It is a legend of its own making.
Again, the school offers the use of our acoustic guitars (child and adult) for those starting out on this instrument. Advice can be given on what type suits the student and in particular, what type of guitar suits their playing style. We can also assist with helping make contact with music instrument suppliers to find the right instrument for you.
Many children grow up dreaming of playing the electric guitar. Now those dreams can become a reality! The school offers beginners the use of our electric guitars so that you get a chance to experience and understand the full range of this instrument, without having to actually buy one until you’re ready.
Our guitar tutors can cater for all levels and genres of music, from rock to country to jazz. Oh, and did we mention, it’s fun!
Try listening to a song without the bass, it’s just not right.
Bass guitar provides an important foundation in music, creating a unique 'groove,' while also offering opportunities for melodic expression and improvisation. Again, the school can provide a bass guitar to help you understand the nuances around this instrument.
Many people feel nervous about performing in front of an audience, and that’s completely normal. At Fife School of Music, we’re here to support you every step of the way. We offer stage performance classes designed to help you build on your existing skills and boost your confidence when performing live. Just ask your tutor for guidance, and they’ll be happy to help.
Performance skills take time and practice to develop, and we understand that gaining confidence on stage is a gradual process. We also recognize that there aren’t always many opportunities for beginners or less experienced performers to practice these skills. That’s why our approach is all about creating a supportive and comfortable space where you can grow, with the help of trained professionals who will guide you through each step
That’s what our tutors are here for. For each instrument, we’ll be able to tell you what is appropriate for your current stage of learning. The school retains several instruments that are freely available to any student taking part in a lesson. This will give you the opportunity to feel and test the instrument before making the financial decision to buy one. We can connect you with local suppliers like “Kennys Music” in Dunfermline, who will aid you in obtaining the best instrument to suit your needs. This goes for any instrument you are interested in.
The more you invest in the quality of equipment - which equates to a lot - the greater the sound quality and the quantity you can ‘manipulate to your own personal preference’. But heavy investment is not needed when starting out, cheapest is not always best but we would advise speaking to your tutor before you buy.
You’re not only investing in your learning but also in yourself.
Investing in better quality equipment improves ease of use greatly but can also mean the difference between an empty sounding performance to well thought out sound design. You gain the advantage of having more options at your disposal, which can go a very long way.
